LPJS London Foil Competition

On 25 March, U10 fencers George Appleton and Madeline Price competed at the LPJS London Foil at the HQ of Leon Paul. A first time at this competition by both fencers who have only recently started to compete. Madeline did amazingly in her poules winning half her bouts. There were two fencers in her poules that would both end up winning Bronze. Madeline beat one and the other she lost by one point. She had a challenging DE but fought valiantly to score 5 points against her opponent. George also won half of his bouts in this poules. He scored a respectable 2 points against the fencer who would win the competition. He smashed his first DE with a 10-0 win but was outfenced in the next round by more experienced competitor. George however, did not give up and continued to valiant battle until the end. Rosie was also competing today but not in the U14 but the U17.

Rosie is currently 12 and she entered the U17 as a development exercise to try to improve in her fencing skills. In her poules, she won five out six bouts to end seeded in first place. She fought well in her DE in the semi-final to make it to the finals. The final was a nailbiting affair with Rosie leading, then trailing behind, and then repeating. Along the way, she received a red card, had a foil malfunction and her second foil snapped in half, which happened at the end of the second period, when the scores were 14 all!! She had to start the final period with a new foil and after one off target, managed to land the winning hit! This is proof that you need more than 2 foils at a competition and luckily Rosie had three on the day, because anything could happen!

Results:

U10 Madeline – 9

U10 George – 7

U17 Rosie – Gold

Fantastic results by everyone in particular, Madeline and George who have both shown great improvements in their competitive experience and their continuous dedication at club evenings, squad trainings and 1-on-1 lessons have improved their performance and fencing skills. Also to Rosie for winning her first Gold in U17 but showing what the competitive fencing route is like for our squad members. Extra special thanks to Matt for supporting our fencers and for the parents who support them. Cambridge Sword is extremely proud of all of you!
